W: Excuse me, but I think you made a wrong turn. You are supposed to turn left on Wilson Bouldevard.
M: Oh, I’m sorry. Didn’t you say 1323 Wilson?
W: No, 3023. It’s OK though. You don’t have to take me there. I can walk from here.
M: Why don’t I just make a U turn at the corner?
W: Well, you shouldn’t make a U turn there. It’s the one-way street. See the sign up your head?
M: Well, maybe if I turn left here I can come down the next street.
W: You can’t do that either during the rush hour. Honestly speaking, don’t go to any trouble. Sometimes one can wait thirty minutes for a taxi. So I’m happy to catch your taxi.
M: Thirty minutes! I’ve been riding around all day looking for passengers.

M: So, are you enjoying the performance so far?
W: Well, the costumes and the set are splendid, but the acting is a bit stiff. What do you think?
M: I think you are being a little critical. The actor in the lead role is fantastic. I suppose the chorus could be a little better, though.
W: Do you know anyone in the play?
M: Actually, the woman playing Ophelia is a past classmate of mine.
W: Really? Is that why you wanted to come to the play?
M: That’s only part of it. I absolutely love the director. Every play he works on turns out great.
W: So you’ve seen other plays that he’s directed?
M: Quite a few actually. By the way, after the play, there’s always a big party for the cast and their friends. My friend has invited us. Do you want to go?
W: Sure. I’d love to meet the cast!

W: Hi, Bob, would you like to go swimming this afternoon?
M: I wish I could, but I have to spend the rest of the day in the library.I have to write an 800-word composition which must be handed in on Monday morning.
W: Oh, is that for Mr.Smith’s class?
M: Yes, I have to study a long poem.My teacher asked me to read it in class the next week.
W: That’s hard.
M: And besides, I also have to study a lot for maths and history.Maths is especially hard for me, as you know.So I don’t know how I’m going to do it at all.
W: Take it easy, Bob.I’ve been doing well in maths, so I’ll be happy to help you.
M: Oh, that would be great, Mary.
W: If you like, we can start right after I come back from swimming.
M: OK, I’ll meet you in front of the library.
W: Good luck.

W: I’d like to know something about transport in Britain.
M: Well, we have got the railways connecting all our big towns. There are over
13, 000 miles of track in Britain. Rail transport provides a very important service.
W: What about road transport? Are your roads very good?
M: Yes, they are on the whole. We’ve got about a quarter of a million miles of roads, and motorways are appearing everywhere. We should have over a thousand miles of motorways soon.
W: Is there a good air service inside Britain?
M: Well, yes. But it is not as important as our rail and road transport systems.
W: What about travelling by sea?
M: As an island people and a trading nation, Britain’s seafaring traditions have always been great. We used to have the biggest merchant navy in the world, carrying one third of the world’s passengers, you know.
W: But I suppose today sea travel has become less important, hasn’t it?
M: It has. But some people still prefer travelling by sea to any other forms of transport.

M: Boys and girls are usually kept apart in sports.Seventy years ago, when a mixed class of Dutch teenagers had to play a sport together, their headmaster wanted to find a sport that was as good for one sex as for the other. But he didn’t think any of the usual sports was right for them.During a visit to Sweden he saw some children playing a game together. This gave him an idea for a new sport. He called it "korfball", from the Dutch word for "basket".However, korfball is an entirely different game from basketball. The sport is played on a pitch the size of a small football field. It includes 3 divisions, known as the attack, centre and defense. Each team has 12 players, 4 in each division. The boys and girls are equal in number. The goal is a basket 3 metres above the ground at each end of the pitch. When a player has the ball he is not allowed to run.He must throw the ball. The ball must always go to a centre player before defense and attack. The sport is simple and excellent for mixed schools.
Korfball is now played in 10 countries, but it is a pity someone is often asked "What did you say you play?" when he says he plays korfball.
