The beginning of October means Nobel Prize time. Daily announcements followed this week. Each prize is about $1,110,000 together with a diploma and gold medal handed out on Dec. 10.
The prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Physiology or Medicine were founded by the will of Alfred Nobel, a wealthy Swedish man. The first awards were presented in 1901, five years after Noble’s death. However, the economics award wasn’t created by Noble but by Sweden’s central bank in 1968.
The Nobel judges are prohibited from making their discussions known for 50 years. They try hard to avoid giving clues about the winners before the announcements.
Scientists often have to wait decades to have their work recognized by the judges. The judges want to make sure any breakthrough stands up to the test of time. However, that’s against Nobel’s will. It states the awards should belong to those who, during the previous year, shall have made the "greatest benefit on mankind".
