Text 1
W: What time does your train leave?
M: At 2:00. We only have ten minutes to get there.
Text 2
W: My brother likes basketball and football.
M: Really? I don’t like either of those sports, but I do like table tennis.
Text 3
M: Dear, what do you think of the blue shirt? Shall I wear it to the party or shall I wear the white one?
W: I think the blue one is better.
Text 4
W: I really like this diamond ring, Albert. The diamond is big enough, the design is fashionable and it represents our love.
M: I agree with you, but I’m afraid that we can’t afford it now, darling.
Text 5
W: OK. Time to go home.
M: I can’t. I haven’t finished the report about the newly opened restaurant.
W: Well. If you carry on working like that, you’ll make yourself ill.
Text 6
W: Tom, I just heard about your brother. How is he doing?
M: He’s in the local hospital. The doctor hasn’t given a clear answer yet.
W: I’m sorry to hear that, but that is a really good hospital. I’m sure they will do whatever they can.
M: I hope so.
W: You must feel worried now. But you know your brother is a fighter.
M: Yeah. But I’m worried more about my parents. They never expected such a thing.
W: Where are they now?
M: They are in the hospital looking after my brother. Julia, could you finish the rest of the work for me? I’m really worried about them.
Text 7
M: Kate, are you going out?
W: Yes. I need a new skirt for Henry’s birthday party.
M: I’m going downtown, too. Could you give me a lift?
W: Sure. By the way, don’t you have a membership card for the Pretty Girls Store?
M: Yes. I often buy clothes for Lucy in that store. I can get a 25 percent discount on everything there.
W: Do you have it on you?
M: Sure.
W: Great. Could we go there first? I want to use your card.
M: Why not? It’s only 2:30. I’ll still have enough time to choose some books.
W: So you are going to the City Library, aren’t you?
M: No, I’m going to buy some books for Lucy. She likes reading.
Text 8
W: Look at all these books. Did you go downtown yesterday?
M: No. I stayed at home all day yesterday. I surfed the Internet and bought the books online.
W: They are all Chinese books. Are you learning Chinese now?
M: I want to. But it is too difficult for me. I bought the books for my little nephew. He is learning Chinese now.
W: That’s interesting. Why does he want to learn Chinese?
M: He is just interested in learning Chinese. Some of his friends are also learning Chinese. They probably think it is fun.
W: It’s easy for kids to learn a new language. It seems they learn much faster than us.
M: They have more time than us. Besides, they can remember new words more quickly.
W: We are just too lazy. We prefer to go shopping and hang out with friends.
Text 9
W: Hello, this is the National Grand Theatre, Box Office. Can I help you?
M: I would like to know when the musical
Nine
will be on.
W: Ah,
Nine
. From July 16th to August 2nd. And its tickets are on sale now.
M: Now? That’s good. What’s the price for the weekend evenings?
W: We have tickets from 140 to 800

.
M: Wow! OK, well, is there a student ticket or a discount for booking early?
W: Sorry, there isn’t. But you can get a ticket for 100
yuan
if you’d like to see the performance on a weekend morning. The morning show begins at half past nine.
M: That sounds great. Can I have three 100
yuan
tickets for Saturday, July 19th?
W: Three for July 19th, the morning performance?
M: Yes. Can you deliver the tickets? And how should I pay for them?
W: Yes, we have a delivery service. And you can pay for the tickets when you get them.
M: That’s good. Thank you.

Dolphins are not fish, but warm-blooded animals.
They live in groups and speak to each other in their own language. In this way they are a lot like other creatures, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals.Their brain is nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time — twenty or thirty years.
Like some animals,
dolphins use sounds to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food.We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.
There is a story about sailors in the 19th century.
In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learned to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903 Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way.
Today, some people continue to kill dolphins,
but many countries of the world now protect them, and in these places it is against the law to kill them.
