W: I guess so. The skies are dark and cloudy.

W: I can’t believe our boss is making me work together with Mike. He looks like a fool.
M: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Do you know his experience? He has been working here since his graduation from Harvard University ten years ago.

M: There is a good chance that Mary will get home today.
W: Well, I hope she drives carefully. You know how the traffic is at this time of year.
M: Oh. Mary’s a good driver. Have confidence in her.

M: Mary is going back to China next month, Alice.
W: Oh, really?
M: And she will not meet Richard this time.

M: Was there anything valuable in the bag that was stolen, madam?
W: Yes. My purse was in it.
M: Anything else?
W: Well, luckily I was wearing my glasses and I left my keys home, so no, nothing else.

M: I haven’t seen you for a long time. Where have you been?
W: I went to New York to visit my sister and stayed there for two months. Actually, I really went to meet my new nephew.
M: That’s great! How old is he?
W: Well. He was five months old when I got there. And he could possibly be the most beautiful baby I have ever seen.
M: What did you do in your sister’s home?
W: I helped the baby and played with him a lot, which was nice. But what I enjoyed most was feeding him.
Text 7
M: Hi, Miya, how are you?
W: I’m very well, thanks, but I’m crazy busy these days. How are you?
M: Fine, thanks. Why are you so busy?
W: I have a Chinese test next week.
M: Come on! I believe you can pass it. Your spoken Chinese is good enough.
W: Uh, speaking is one thing while the exam is another thing. I’m afraid...
M: Anyway, do you want to have a coffee now?
W: OK, but I don’t have much time. I have to go to the library.
M: It won’t take long. Let’s go to the café
.

M: The service is really slow here. I’ve been trying to get the waiter’s attention for the last ten minutes.
W: I hope he will wait on us soon. I have a class at two o’clock.
M: Me,too. I recognize that English book. You must be a student at the English Language Center.
W: Yeah. I’m in the fourth course. Are you studying there?
M: Yes, I’m in the fifth course. I took the fourth course last month.
W: I just came here two weeks ago. Do you like the institute?
M: It’s pretty good. I think I’ve learned a lot of English so far.
W: Yeah. I only wish the classes were a little smaller, though, because we don’t get enough chance to talk. But I like my teachers a lot.
M: How long are you going to be here?
W: I guess a year, but sometimes I feel like going home.
M: You’ll get used to it.
W: Yeah, I think so. Oh, here comes the waiter. It looks like we’re going to get served at last.
M: Good. I’m starving.
Text 9
M: This is Star Supermarket. What can I do for you?
W: This is Mrs. White. I bought a fridge a week ago, but it hasn’t arrived yet. When can you get it delivered?
M: I’m sorry, Mrs. White. I’ll check it at once. Can I have your full name, address and telephone number?
W: Yes, it’s Ellen White. My address is 200 Dlower Willas and the phone number is 77533206.
M: Thank you, Mrs. White. I’ll check it with the Delivery Department and please just hold on for a moment. (About half a minute later) Yes, Mrs.White. I’ve found out the reason why your fridge hasn’t been delivered. There was something wrong at our end, and I’m terribly sorry about it. It will be delivered to your house
without fail tomorrow morning. Will that be OK?
W: All right. I hope you’ll be more careful from now on.
M: Yes, we will. We won’t let it happen again.
W: Good.
M: Thank you very much, Mrs. White Goodbye.

Good morning, everyone. Thank you for coming along. I’m afraid there is a serious matter. Last night, someone broke into the staff room and a number of things are missing. I have already spoken to the police and I trust things will go no further. The police believe that whoever is responsible for the theft is probably a member of this college.
Now, the things that are missing. First of all, a valuable clock has disappeared. The clock cannot easily be sold as it has the name of the college on the front and would immediately be recognized. A painting of the college by Arnolfini has also been stolen, and again this would be easily recognized as it shows the main college buildings.
Now, whoever took these objects also broke open the cupboard in the staff room and took some antique glasses, eight altogether. These were given to the college many years ago by another director. They could easily get broken and although they were insured they could not be replaced. I’m glad to say the bottles of drink were not removed.
Not surprisingly, both the TV and video recorder have been taken away. But perhaps the most worrying of all is the fact that the end-of-term examination papers have been stolen. If these papers cannot be marked, everyone in the college will suffer. Now if you can help, or if you have seen or heard anything that is helpful, please call me.
