Text 1
M: Did you hear about the fire at the department store?
W: Yes. It’s reported that the building is in ruins.
M: That’s right. It went up like a matchbox. There was nothing they could do to save it.
Text 2
M: What do you think is the most important thing at a school, the courses, the equipment, or something else?
W: Well, I don’t think there’s anything more important than the teachers.
Text 3
W: How long have you been in the army?
M: Twenty-five years. I joined up right after college.
W: Well, I have been in the army for seven years.
Text 4
M: Look!
The printer is broken. I told you it wasn’t working.
W: Of course it won’t work! See, the ink has been used up. You have to add some.
M: I’m sorry. I didn’t know what it meant.
Text 5
M: Helen, do you have a meeting in Edinburgh?
W: Yeah, I’m going to see some important people there. What’s up?
M: I’m going to visit Glasgow on Wednesday and it’s quite near Edinburgh.
W: Ah...I’m going to drive there tomorrow, so you can go with me.
Text 6
M: I hear you are going to leave us for Chicago. Is it true?
W: Yes, you know, I’ve got a new job there.
M: I dare say you will miss us and our studio when you leave, won’t you?
W: Oh, indeed.
But it is a much greater opportunity for me.
M: Surely it is. There are many heavy industries in Chicago so there is probably a lot of air pollution.
W: Yeah, but that is life, I guess.
Text 7
W: George, you look so angry. What happened?
M: Nothing. I’d rather you didn’t ask about it.
W: Come on. It bothers me when you feel sad. Besides, you shouldn’t keep your feelings inside. So, talk to me.
M: All right. This morning I took my broken camera to the shop. I just bought it for 600 dollars two days ago. They said it was my own problem. They would charge me 100 dollars if I wanted it repaired.
W: What’s wrong with the new camera?
M: I’m sure it has enough battery, and I didn’t drop it, but it doesn’t show anything on the screen.
W: No wonder you’re so angry. I’d be mad, too, if someone treated me like that.
M: Yeah. And they were rude. They said I didn’t know anything about cameras.
W: Maybe you should file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Agency.
Text 8
M: Have you finished your assignment for Dr. Martin’s class? I’m really having difficulties with it.
W: No, I haven’t. I think it’s really hard, too, so I’m meeting with my study group tonight to talk it over.
M: Oh, I didn’t know you had joined a study group. Is it working well?
W: I think so. I’ve only been there a few times, but everybody seems serious and helpful. Last time it really helped me to understand the analysis he gave in class.
M: Um. Can anyone join the group?
W: Sure. Right now there are only four of us. If you want to join, I’m sure that nobody would object. Why don’t you come over tonight? We’re meeting at my house.
M: OK, I will. I’ll try anything at this point.
Text 9
W:What kind of house shall we rent?
M: It should be close to our office building. You know we couldn’t adapt to getting up early and the closer it is, the later we can get up.
W: Absolutely. That is the most important thing to consider.
M: How about the size?
W: I am not too worried about the size as long as there is enough sunlight in the bedroom. Do you mind if it is in a noisy area?
M: I don’t mind. I am not a light sleeper, but a quiet area is better, for we can do our research at home.
W: OK, let’s pay more attention to the newspapers.
M: If we are lucky, we will find a flat in the next few days. By the way, how much do you think the rent will be?
W: I have consulted the house agent about the price. He said it would be about two hundred pounds a month.
M: Oh, I think the price is reasonable and acceptable.
W: I think so. How I wish we could find an ideal flat quickly, because our present house is due.
Text 10
Very strong winds will bring rain to Scotland and most of Northern England in the morning. These winds will die away during the afternoon to give a cold clear night and there may be ice on the roads in Scotland. The rest of England and Wales will have a dry day, and in London, temperatures will be higher than normal at this time of year. The evening will be cold with fog in many places in Cardiff, but temperatures will not be low enough for ice to form.
Tomorrow will be a windy day with rain everywhere until around noon. In the afternoon the rain will clear from the southwest, bringing fine weather to the parts by the evening and there may be some sun in London. But temperatures will be low and the winds may bring some snow anywhere in the north and west before morning.
