Text 1
W: Have you seen that huge new building going up near the market?
M: Yes. I can’t figure out what it’s going to be. Not an apartment building. Not a hotel. Probably a department store.
Text 2
M: Is it still raining outside?
W: No, but the wind is still blowing.
Text 3
M: Where does Suzanne come from?
W: She was born in Switzerland and grew up in Spain but now she’s a citizen of England.
Text 4
W: There was a storm warning on the radio this morning. Did you happen to be listening?
M: No, but what a pity! I guess we’ll have to change our sailing plans. Would you rather play tennis or go bicycle-riding?
Text 5
M: I’m going out to get some coffee. Would you like something?
W: Well, I’ve been drinking too much coffee recently. Thanks for asking. I’d just drink the tea I have right here.
Text 6
W: I just saw Jack at the bus station. Why is he waiting for a bus?
M: He has to go to a lecture at 10: 00 this morning.
W: I know that. But why does he have to wait for a bus? You always go to school by bicycle together, don’t you?
M: That’s right. But his bicycle broke down, and he had it repaired this morning.
W: Well, I see.

W: Why are you still in bed, Charlie? Get up right away, or you will be late for school.
M: Let me sleep a little longer. I’m too tired.
W: No, you can’t sleep any more. It’s too late.
M: Too late? What time is it now?
W: It’s seven now. You have only thirty minutes left to get to school.
M: Oh, what shall I do? How can I get to school so soon?
W: Dress yourself quickly. And here is a bottle of milk and some bread for your breakfast. I’ll take you to school in my car.
M: Oh, thank you, Mom.
Text 8
M: Hello, Mr. Ward speaking.
W: Hello, my name is Mary Brown. I’d like to take your course on American geography.
M: I’m sorry. There’re already so many students in my class.
W: I know, but I’m a student from another school, and I’ll be here for only half a year. We don’t have this course in our school, and I think it will be interesting.
M: I see. But it might be difficult for you. It’s for science students only.
W: I think I can manage it, though I’m not a science student.
M: OK, I’ll consider that.
Text 9
W: Good morning, can I help you?
M: Yes, please. I would like to know something about the courses at this evening school.
W: Well, we have short full-time courses during the summer.
M: Um. I would like to know how long one course lasts.
W: Well, each course lasts for three weeks.
M: How many hours per week, please?
W: It’s about twenty-three hours a week. Usually four and a half days each week.
M: You must have a lot of students in your class, don’t you?
W: We have a lot of students in the school, but in one class only between twelve and fourteen students.
M: Could you please give me the dates of the first and second courses?
W: Yes, certainly. The first course begins on July 3rd and lasts until July 20th and the second course is from July 24th until August 10th.
M: OK. Thank you very much.

Hi, it is time for the night news. The police say a 78-year-old woman ran after two robbers who stole her purse in her car and hit their car with her own, leaving damage on their car, which helped the police catch them.
The old lady was sitting in her car on Tuesday afternoon when a man and a woman got close to her. As she talked to them through an open window, the man grabbed her purse and they got into their car quickly and fled. The police say the old woman started her car at once, sped up and hit the thieves’ car, but the two people drove off in their damaged car. Then the old lady reported this crime. A few hours later the police found the damaged car in a grocery store’s parking lot and the two were caught and sentenced on Wednesday. The police say the two people followed the woman after seeing her draw money from a bank.
