M: Don't you have air-conditioning in your apartment? It's so hot here!
W: Well, there's air-conditioning. Look, can you see that window there? The problem is that the wind unit is not powerful enough.
M: I guess not.
W: Well, I'm going to move out anyway. The new apartment has central air-conditioning.
M: You should have moved out before.
W: Well, I have to wait until the new apartment is well decorated.
M: So how can you stand the heat?
W: Well, I open the windows and I've got an electric fan here. It helps a little.

W: Good morning, Beautiful Smile Dentist, this is Jasmine. How may I help you today?
M: Good morning, I'd like to schedule a check-up.
W: I'd be happy to do that for you. Have you been to Beautiful Smile before?
M: Yes, I have. My last check-up was six months ago.
W: Great. Can I get your name, please?
M: Yes, of course. My name is David.
W: Thank you, David. Which dentist did you see on your last check-up?
M: Dr. Lee.
W: OK... Dr. Lee has time next Friday in the morning.
M: That's not good. I've got work. How about the week after that?
W: Yes. Would you like to suggest a time?
M: Does he have any time in the afternoon?
W: Yes, we could fit you in on Thursday, January 17th at 2:30 in the afternoon.
M: Great. That'll work.
W: OK, thank you for calling, David. We'll see you then.

M: Welcome to Chicago! This is our traffic guidance system, which controls the city's seven expressways.
W: Can it follow the movement of Chicago's traffic just by looking at these sets of lights?
M: Absolutely. The system uses electric equipment that is built into each expressway, every half a mile. Several times a second, a computer receives information from the equipment and translates it into green, yellow or red lights on this map.
W: What does a green light mean?
M: It shows traffic is moving forty-five miles or more an hour.
W: What about yellow?
M: Yellow means thirty to forty-five miles an hour.
W: Red means heavy traffic?
M: That's true. See that red light near Austin Avenue? That's a repair truck fixing the road, and the traffic has to go around it.
W: Why does the light over there keep changing from green to red and back to green again?
M: There is the Roosevelt Road entrance to the expressway. A lot of trucks get on the expressway there. They can't speed up as fast as cars.
W: Has the system lowered the number of accidents?
M: There are now 1.4 deaths on Chicago's expressway for each one hundred million miles travelled, while in other parts of the country there are 2.6.
W: Wow! That's really awesome!

M: Miss Jones, can you just answer me one question? Why is it that I have to take P.E. every year? It's exactly the same. I'm forced to embarrass myself in front of the rest of the class. It's not so bad for the kids who are athletes, but for people like me, it's not so easy. Look, Miss. I know that you think P.E. is just as important as maths and biology, and that everyone should get a grade based on their abilities and skills. But why do we have to change the activities all the time? Can't we stick with one thing for a while, so I can at least improve a little. Football isn't so bad, but when I play most of the other sports I just become entertainment for the rest of the class. High school is embarrassing enough without coming in five minutes after everyone else during running the mile...While they are showering or eating lunch, I'm just crossing the finish line. Look. I already know the theory that sport is an important part of a good education. But I just don't agree. I know there's not much you can do for me, but thanks, for at least letting me get that off my chest...See you in the gym in a minute.
